Finrod Felagund, Lord of Nargothrond.
Finrod was the eldest son of Finarfin and Eärwen. He was fair of face and generous of heart, and he was counted the wisest of the exiled Ñoldor. Although he opposed Fëanor and his oath, he joined the Ñoldor who departed Aman, not wanting to be parted from his people who had resolved to go. He first established the tower of Minas Tirith on the isle of Tol Sirion, and later, warned by Ulmo in a dream of the need of a stronghold against Morgoth, he established Nargothrond in the Caverns of Narog beneath the hills of Taur-en-Faroth. He was aided in this by the Dwarves of the Blue Mountains, and from them he received the name Felagund, Hewer of Caves.

He was of a curious nature and loved wandering in the wild, and in days of peace he went hunting with Maglor and Maedhros, sons of Fëanor, and later left them to explore on his own. So it was that he was the first of the Ñoldor to come across Men, and he both taught them and learned from them. He was named by them Nóm, Wisdom, and was called Edennil also, Friend-of-Men.

During the Dagor Bragollach, Barahir of the House of Bëor saved his life, and in return Finrod swore an oath that he would provide friendship and aid to Barahir and all his kin. He fulfilled this oath years later when Beren, son of Barahir, came to Nargothrond seeking help with the Quest for the Silmaril. With gear and weapons taken from Orcs they had slain and aided by the magic of Finrod, they disguised themselves, but they were captured and taken to Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves, formerly the watchtower of Minas Tirith. There Finrod battled Sauron with songs of power, but eventually Sauron had the mastery and stripped the company of their disguise, although he could not discover their purpose or their names. They were imprisoned and killed by werewolves, one by one, until only Beren and Finrod remained. When Sauron sent a wolf for Beren, Finrod instead broke free of his chains and slew the wolf barehanded, but he was mortally wounded and died in the dark, in the tower he himself had built. His body was buried on the isle, purifying it of Sauron’s presence, and his grave remained green until the land changed. But Finrod’s spirit did not remain long in the Halls of Mandos, and he soon dwelt again in Aman.
